Ready to get your geek on? The Technology Bytes Radio crew is here to help! Broadcast each Wednesday night, from 8-10 PM CST on Houston’s own KPFT 90.1 FM, it has been on the air, once a week, since 1995 making them one of the longest running computer tech shows around! And being geeks, if you prefer you can always listen over the streaming broadcast on your computer. Can’t tune into the show at that time? That is ok too! They have podcasts available for you to download on the GeekRadio.com site as well!

The show was started back in 1995 by Jay & Peter, and over the years they have added Barrett, phliKtid, Dwight & Groovehouse to the mix. You might know Dwight also as the Houston Chronicle Technology Techblogger. Basically, these are some of the most helpful & knowledgeable geeks in Houston – and if you’re not tuning in, you’re missing out!

I brought my camera along to photograph their 15th Anniversary Party at the House of Blue’s Foundation Room in July. There were a ton of people and everyone had a great time! An added bonus? Cool t-shirts with glow in the dark lettering on the back! (If you spot people in the photos below with t-shirts over their shoulders, now you know why.)

Tune in every Wednesday to hear the show live on the radio, streaming over the web, and download the latest podcasts. Follow them on Twitter: Jay Lee, Peter, Dwight, Barrett and phliKtid. Join them for the monthly Geek Gatherings, and come and talk about technology with them!

I decided it was time I made a cameo appearance here! Me with Katie Sunstrom, my favorite geek lawyer!

I’ve met so many great people thanks to this radio show and the Geek Gatherings, and they are so supportive of the Houston community. Thanks again to Technology Bytes Radio for 15 years of AWESOME!!!

Interested in participating in the #SLGT Photo Project? There are still several sessions available in the $75-125 price range – and buying a session today can help the SLGT Habitat for Humanity House Build! For any sessions booked between today and September 17, 2010, I’ll donate 15% of the session fee to the Habitat for Humanity house! I’ll be out there on September 13 documenting the start of the house – will you be there? Learn more about it here!

There are several sessions “in the can” so to speak – they will be featured here on the blog over the next two weeks (in no particular order): Profile with Greg Sheinman, Schipul – the Web Marketing Company, Blinds.com, Noah’s Kitchen, Sofia’s Organizing Solutions, Cake Communications, Technology Bytes, Lakeside Collision Specialists, Adolf Hoepfl Garage, Forthea, and Entrepreneur Camp. I can’t wait to share them all with you!

But wait! Aren’t there more sessions than that that have been sold? Yes, yes there are. But sometimes people’s schedules are just so full, they don’t have time for a session yet. It has been a zillion degrees for most of the summer, and they want an outdoor shoot. They are waiting to get their whole team together for the shoot. They are traveling themselves. Kids get sick, or they get sick. Whatever the reason, the session hasn’t happened yet. There are a lot of shoots coming up though, and I’ll be posting them as they happen!

Everyone should have received an email with a link and instructions on how to set it up using the scheduler – if you haven’t, please use the contact form and let me know! And if you have received the link but you’re just waiting for the right time, that is cool. I’ll be here when you’re ready!

Thank you again to everyone for your support. It has been such an incredible experience meeting so many of you, and the BEST part is hearing about other people connecting because of this project! I love that it is helping everyone’s businesses grow! I look forward to seeing what the future holds!

Sew Crafty is the coolest place ever for crafty types – and people who want to learn to craft – here in Houston! It is Houston’s first craft studio and sewing lounge. Located in the Houston Heights, Sew Crafty offers classes in sewing, knitting, kids crafts and DIY workshops to give everyone from beginners to super crafters the chance to learn new skills and have a blast!

I took a sewing class from Sew Crafty awhile back, and in a matter of hours I went from never having touched a sewing machine to making my very own cute crafting apron. It was such an incredible, well laid out, informative class! Once I work my way through all of my knitting projects, I plan to go back for more sewing classes so I can create some of their other projects as well!

Look at what all they offer!

  • Classes in sewing (beginner to advanced), knitting (beginner/intermediate) and Crochet
  • Workshops in everything from Gocco printing to quick-and-easy DIY projects to repurposing T-Shirts – each time something new is featured
  • Special events, like the monthly Crafty Cocktails – an evening of craftacular sophistication and socializing
  • Crafting for a Cause – your chance to give back to those in need and take a free class to boot!
  • A sewing lounge where you can use our machines, supplies and cutting tables to work on your projects (find out more details)
  • A well-edited selection of patterns, craft kits, notions, fabrics, yarn and handmade gifts
  • Private parties for your girls night out, baby and bridal showers, and kids parties

Their sewing lounge is divine! The upstairs room has the biggest cutting table area I’ve ever seen, ironing boards, sewing machines, and all the supplies you might need organized in one spot. Don’t want to set up a room in your home just for sewing? No problem! Sew Crafty has you covered!

Sarah is one of the fabulous ladies behind Sew Crafty, and I’m so glad we got to spend some time together photographing the shop and then sneaking out before the rain started to get some photographs of her as well!

Be sure to keep an eye on the Sew Crafty Blog for all the latest news, check out the class schedule, and sign up for their newsletter, because you really don’t want to miss what is going on here!

Want to see YOUR business featured here? Buy a Session! Best part? For all sessions booked between August 30th & September 10th, 15% of the session fee will be donated towards the SLGT & Habitat for Humanity Home Build! Yes – you CAN book the $70-125 sessions still, so this is one of the best deals in town! What are you waiting for?

The Body Dynamic - Houston massage, facial & waxing

Serenity. The minute I walked into The Body Dynamic, I felt an instant peaceful calm. It had been a stressful day. Houston summer rains, with the threat of flash floods. Traffic. But there? It was an oasis of quiet. I have to admit it, I didn’t want to leave at the end of our photo shoot.

Susan herself is the heart of that calming factor. When you go to someone for the services she offers, you want someone that makes you feel at peace. Susan has that voice that brings you to your center almost instantly. She exudes trust and confidence.

The Body Dynamic offers therapeutic massage, lymph drainage therapy, neuromuscular therapy, holistic skin care, Lypossage body contouring, and waxing. The signature massage session is a combination of Swedish, Shiatsu, and other relaxing and therapeutic techniques. You can also inquire about on-site chair massage for your workplace or special event. Several facials are available whether you’re on your lunch break, or you have a couple of hours to spend with her. Microdermabrasion and many types of peels are available to resurface the skin.

Susan Monk RMT, CLP, licensed esthetician is a graduate of the National Holistic Institute in Emeryville, CA where she completed a course of study in many healing modalities of massage therapy and spa body treatments. She studied esthetics in Houston at Jones International Cosmetology College. Susan is also a graduate of Wellesley College. She is a certified practitioner of Lypossage, and is a member of the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals.

Susan offers a comprehensive page of frequently asked questions about all of her services on her site.

If you are looking for someone to take excellent care of you, offer you one of the best waxing treatments in Houston, a fantastic facial, or a fabulous healing massage, look no further. Susan is who you’ve been looking for!

I met recently with Greg Scheinman of Insgroup, Inc. for a photo shoot. Since its founding in 1978, Insgroup has focused on meeting the insurance, risk management, and employee benefits needs of businesses, professional firms, not for profit organizations, and individuals. Today, Insgroup ranks as one of the largest independent insurance brokers in Texas, with their headquarters in Houston and offices in Austin and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In 2009, Insgroup was ranked by Insurance Journal as one of the top 100 independent insurance agencies in the United States by property/casualty premium volume.

Insgroup serves an extensive range of industries, from real estate and construction, to manufacturing, energy and marine, technology, healthcare and professional firms. They offer a comprehensive portfolio of services, including commercial insurance brokerage, claims management, loss control, risk management consulting, employee benefits brokerage/consulting, and personal insurance services.

Their clients span the entire business spectrum, from publicly traded firms to local businesses. They provide customized insurance products that allow our clients to protect their balance sheet and grow their business.

As one of the top 100 independent insurance agencies in the U.S., Insgroup places a significant amount of premium in the commercial insurance marketplace, and has relationships with and access to most major national and international insurance carriers and benefits providers. They also work with many specialty and regional insurance carriers, enabling Insgroup to meet all of our clients insurance, risk management, and employee benefits needs.

Most importantly, as a closely held independent firm, they answer to their clients…not outside investors. This structure allows them to deliver on their commitments to client advocacy, integrity, and innovation.

Insgroup: Acting Faster, Thinking Smarter, Working Harder.
